It seems that the countdown to Christmas has already started! Judging by the twinkling trees, decorations and festive music already playing in most shops (and in many TV ads), it appears as if the big day is just around the corner.
After all the uncertainties, isolation and cancellations imposed by Covid-19 and the lockdowns during the past 2 years, I am delighted that we are able to bring back our special festive markets in Wells next month.
Our traditional "Christmas in Wells" events will be running on the last 2 Saturdays before Christmas (on 11th and 18th) from 9am to 3pm. 100 stalls will line the Market Place, with many offering locally sourced produce, all the way through to the Bishop's Palace (a big thank you to the Bishop’s Palace for the support!).
There’ll be a glittering range of gifts, crafts, food and Christmas tipples on offer, and live entertainment, including the talented Priddy Singers. It should get everyone - even the curmudgeons and the Grinches - into the Christmas spirit. You can find out more here: www.mendip.gov.uk/christmasmarket.
It’s a great opportunity for all of us, locals and visitors, to find those special and difficult-to-find last-minute presents and treats in our wonderful historic city. There’ll also be plenty of great Christmas gift ideas and food in all our Mendip markets - in Frome, Shepton, Glastonbury and Street - running right up to Christmas. Make sure you make a note of the dates of your local markets, so you don’t miss the chance to buy local!
To support our high streets across the district, all Mendip-owned pay and display car parks will be free of charge during the run-up to Christmas from Saturday 18th December to Christmas Day. But please remember that although parking is free, all other terms and conditions of car parking within the relevant car parks remain, and maximum time limits still apply in all short stay car parks. This is to ensure everyone has a fair chance to enjoy this offer.
There’s also good news for New Year revellers. Our car parks will be free all day on Saturday 1st January to allow drivers to leave their cars overnight on New Year's Eve so they can celebrate and get home safely without driving.
All our small businesses and traders are extremely important to us in Mendip, and, as your council, we are doing what we can to support them. Last month we launched the “Mendip Business Hub”, a new one-stop-shop online service for businesses. It will provide expert advice, guidance and support. Find out more here: www.mendip.gov.uk/business hub.
We’re also providing support for an initiative called “Small Business Saturday” at selected car parks. Anyone visiting this event on 4th December will find charges suspended in Cranhill Road, Street; St John's car park, Glastonbury; Union Street, Wells; Great Ostry, Shepton, and the Cattle Market, Frome (as above, check terms and conditions).
