Tessa's Update on Climate Emergency

Thank you if you signed the Climate Emergency petition. On February 20th Somerset County Council voted in favour of declaring a Climate Emergency, with only 4 councillors choosing not to support this.

On Wednesday 6th March the County Council’s Scrutiny Committee met. This committee is responsible for recommending actions to combat the Climate Emergency here in Somerset.

Somerset’s last Climate Change Strategy "Responding to Climate Change in Somerset" was published in February 2008, when the Lib Dems still ran the County Council.

A Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan was issued in April 2009.

Although these documents are very out of date, they are a good starting point for the work that is necessary.

As I said to Claire Carter on BBC Somerset, I know many people here with skills, knowledge, expertise and an interest in doing something – not just talking about this stuff. So, if you have something to offer and can help the County Council make the changes necessary, please contact me.

This is going to take courage, leadership and discussions about ethical decision-making – v – the constant pressure to save taxpayers’ money. I know where I stand.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Tessa.
